Theoretical Aspects of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays
نویسنده
چکیده
We review the basic ideas on the origin of cosmic rays with energy in excess of ∼ 10 eV, in the light of the most recent observational findings. The limited statistics of events detected by the two largest experiments currently operating does not allow as yet to claim the detection of the GZK feature in the cosmic ray spectrum or the lack of it. Although extragalactic point sources seem to be preferred on the basis of the small scale anisotropies detected by AGASA, the possibility that UHECRs with energy in excess of 10 eV may be the result of the decay of supermassive particles is not ruled out by present data. It seems clear that if we want to have a clear idea of the origin of UHECRs, we have to auspicate the realization of larger, better experiments, such as the ongoing Auger project and the space-borne EUSO experiment.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays: Observations and Theoretical Aspects
We present a brief introduction to the physics of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs), concentrating on the experimental results obtained so far and on what, from these results, can be inferred about the sources of UHECRs.
متن کاملSome Current Theoretical Issues around Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays *
We address some current theoretical issues around ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We recall that scenarios producing more γ−rays than cosmic rays up to high redshift can in general only provide a sub-dominant contribution to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray flux. This includes extra-galactic top-down and the Z-burst scenarios. Finally we discuss the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic field...
متن کاملUltra High Energy Cosmic Radiation: Experimental and Theoretical Status
We give a brief overview of the current experimental and theoretical status of cosmic rays above ∼ 1017 eV. We focus on the role of large scale magnetic fields and on multi-messenger aspects linking charged cosmic ray with secondary γ−ray and neutrino fluxes.
متن کاملOpen questions with ultra-high energy cosmic rays
We briefly discuss three aspects related to the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) namely: 1) particle acceleration in astrophysical sources; 2) transition to an extragalactic origin; 3) spectrum and anisotropies at the highest energies.
متن کاملULTRA HIGH ENERGY COSMIC RAYS: the theoretical challenge
The origin of the highest-energy cosmic rays remains a mystery. The lack of a high energy cutoff in the cosmic ray spectrum together with an apparently isotropic distribution of arrival directions have strongly constrained most models proposed for the generation of these particles. An overview of the present state of theoretical proposals is presented. Astrophysical accelerators as well as top-...
متن کاملParticle and Astrophysics Aspects of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays
The origin of cosmic rays is one of the major unresolved astrophysical questions. In particular, the highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging from conventional shock acceleration to particle physics beyond t...
